the patient would generally complain ofa gritty discomfort in the eyes a watery discharge andsystemic symptoms such as a sore throat or fluelike symptoms which mayalso be present symptoms may last for a few weeks andthe mainstay of treatment is using a cool compress. Lubricant eye drops may also help to provide comfort it's important to note that viralconjunctivitis is highly contagious and patients shouldbe made aware of this

so as to limit the spread of theinfection The second cause we shall discuss is bacterial conjunctivitis. Althoughsymptoms may be similar to viral conjunctivitis in that a patient would complain of mildgritty discomfort a key differentiator is that bacterialconjunctivitis is associated with a crusty dischargewhich is usually noticed by a patient uponwaking up in the morning

Treatment involves Chloramphenicol drops which are to be used every four hours for the first hours, and then four times dailyfor the remainder of the course Finally allergic conjunctivitis affects both eyes and a patient is likely to complain of warery, itchy eyes. The patient is likely to suffer from other allergic conditions such Hay fever. Thiscondition may be treated by antihistamines or mast cell stabilizers, for instance Sodium cromoglicate eye
