Do I have to wear a retainer Retainer Wear Part 1
A common question that I get is quot;how oftendo I wear my retaineréquot; Literally, I tell patients, you wear a retainer for aslong as you want your teeth to be straight. Once we remove the appliances, or the braces, studies show it takes a minimum of 6 months for the bone and the tissue fibers to firmup again. The most stable position you are orthodontically is the way you initially cometo us; and what we do is we take your teeth and move them to what we consider ideal, becauseeveryone wants a perfectly straight smile, and we forget as individuals that we're fightingother forces in the mouth: we have the lips, we have the cheeks, we have the tongue. Ourteeth have an anatomical position in our mouth
that's called neutral zone. In order to holdthose teeth after braces come off and to keep perfectly straight teeth, you have to retainthem, and that's no different than any other part of our body. I tell the ladies, if youwant to have blonde hair and continue to die your hair, you have to do that over the years. If you want to have beautiful nails, you have to maintain your nails. Beautiful teeth, youhave to maintain those teeth, so, it's the same no matter what aspect in life that wewant to maintain that youthfulness, we have to do something to keep it. With retainers, after about the first year of orthodontic treatment, I tell people, teeth are fairlystable at that point. What happens after that,
retainers become an insurance policy, andthe reason that I say that is, no matter if you have braces or not, as we continue toage, everyone gets tooth movement, everyone. How muché That's the unknown variable. I'vebeen very fortunate in my life, I've never had braces before, but I've had very littletooth movement throughout my life. I've had other patients who have had a lot of toothmovement throughout life. And you just don't know which one you're going to be. And, orthodonticpatients, because they're used to perfectly straight teeth, if a tooth moves just a littlebit, they pick it up instantly, like that. So I always encourage patients to continueto wear retainers for the rest of their life,
and it's just minimizing the chances of toothmovement over the years, is all you're doing. You're increasing your odds of keeping straightteeth.
